We’ve introduced a Low Salt option to the Lifestyle Diets section of the app to help people make healthier choices around salt.
Here’s why that’s important.
Salt, like sugar and fat, is one of those ingredients we know we shouldn’t eat too much of. In fact a diet high in salt has been linked to high blood pressure which in turn causes strokes and heart attack. Currently a third of all Brits are affected by high blood pressure. In addition to this, people with high cholesterol levels or diabetes are encouraged to reduce their salt intake to help reduce the risks associated with these diseases.
UK Government guidelines suggest that we shouldn’t be eating more than 6g of salt a day. That’s 2g less than the amount we currently eat! So how is it that so much salt seems to sneak into our food?
Research suggests that 75% of our salt intake comes from everyday food such as bread, pre-made meals, and even breakfast cereal. Food manufacturers are making active efforts to reduce the salt in their foods, and over the last 10 years we’ve seen products reformulated to contain 20-40% less salt than they previously did. However, we should be making a conscious effort to look for lower salt food products.
To help make things easier for us as consumers, the UK Government has released a ‘traffic light’ system for Low, Medium and High Salt products, similar to the ones we see for Sugar and Fat.
When you select the Low Salt option on the Spoon Guru app, only products which have less than 0.3g per 100g of salt will be allowed.
